Arup and Business in the Community release new guidance for businesses progressing circular economy agendas

To mark Earth Overshoot Day, global sustainable development consultancy Arup and responsible business network Business in the Community (BITC) have released the key findings of the Circular Economy Taskforce leadership roundtable series that ran between July 2022 and July 2023, informing a new set of guidance to enable organisations’ circularity adoption.

Arup develops fire safety guidance for EVs in covered car parks

Together with the Office for Zero Emissions Vehicles (OZEV), Arup has provided interim guidance to support parking and/or charging of electric vehicles and the installation of electric vehicle charge points in covered car parks.

The full transition to electric vehicles (EVs) will be one of the most important actions to achieve the UK’s net zero target. To achieve this, UK Government and industry must implement a range of policy and market mechanisms needed particularly for passenger vehicles and vans. The pathway to a full transition to electric passenger vehicles is clear and relatively straightforward; but a lack of targets for sufficient charging infrastructure was one of several key barriers identified by Climate Change Committee to be overcome to reach the 2030 transition date.

Charge point grant programmes have been rolled out to accelerate installation of EV Charge Points (EVCPs), and measures have been taken to increase the usability of them, but there was no guidance available to address increasing concerns over fire risk of electric vehicles and associated charge points.

Arup supports Welsh Government with the implementation of legislation to reduce flood risk and pollution in Wales

Arup has supported Welsh Government in reviewing and reporting on the implementation of Schedule 3 of the Flood and Water Management Act 2010. The legislation provides a framework for approving and implementing drainage systems, introduces a sustainable drainage system approval body in local councils, and national standards for designing, constructing, operating, and maintaining sustainable drainage systems throughout the development's lifespan.

Maximising high-value opportunities within the UK CCS supply chain

A new report published this week by global sustainable development consultancy, Arup, commissioned by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, outlines “high value” opportunities within the Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) supply chain that UK industry is well placed to take advantage of, and examines areas of risk to UK CCS deployment caused by bottlenecks in current supply chain capabilities.

The UK is uniquely well-positioned to lead the global development and deployment of carbon capture and storage. World-leading capital investment landscape and the storage supporting geography and geology, provide the UK with a clear opportunity to develop and maintain a CCS focussed industry and supply chain.

CCS has the power to rapidly decarbonise our existing industry, power sectors, and support the production of low carbon hydrogen, while enabling growth and the creation of high-value UK jobs. As we progress towards our national target of capturing between 20 and 30Mt of CO??per year by 2030, we will only be just beginning to take advantage of our estimated 78 gigatonnes (Gt) total national reserve of CO? storage.

Arup’s Union Terrace Gardens wins Best Lighting category at the 2023 Scottish Design Awards

Over 120 companies and organisations submitted world class-leading work for the 2023 edition of the annual Scottish Design Awards, however Arup’s work on Union Terrace Gardens came out on top, receiving the gold award in the lighting category.

Originally opened in 1879, Union Terrace Gardens, located in Aberdeen city centre, reopened in December 2022 following a series of upgrades to transform the site back into a much-loved public space. Arup was commissioned by Aberdeen City Council to help develop a regeneration plan that was sympathetic of Union Terrace Gardens historical role in the city.?

Arup, the global employee-owned sustainability and engineering consultancy, has won a prestigious award for its approach to public-private partnerships in Birmingham.

The Local Government Chronicle (LGC) Awards 2023 recognise in particular the work Arup and Birmingham City Council carried out in collaboration before, during and since the 2022 Commonwealth Games, which were launched so spectacularly a year ago on 28 July.

The engagement and legacy aspects of the Games have been highlighted as a powerful example of partnership in practice. The value of private sector resources and expertise applied to a public sector event as well as the transfer of appropriate enterprise skills that added resilience to the city council’s plans and continues to do so were hugely welcome at a key moment in the city’s history.

This has allowed the council to move forward with further commercial and cultural programmes into 2023, for example, as well as successfully bring the Perry Barr masterplan to fruition.

Arup’s ability to add this value and bring a fresh perspective to many of the key aspects of the Games preparation and delivery, from transport, venue design and legacy, also continues to shape and benefit local communities today.

Arup collaborations showcased at the 18th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia

Arup is delighted to continue to collaborate with La Biennale di Venezia, the world’s leading architecture exhibition, as it reopens its doors to explore a crucial idea: ‘What does it mean to be an agent of change?’

The Biennale Architettura 2023, one of the most significant events in the architectural calendar, is set to take place from May 20 to November 26. This year’s theme, The Laboratory of the Future", provides architects and designers with a unique opportunity to present ambitious and creative ideas that help to envision a more sustainable future.

The event is curated by Lesley Lokko, an academic, educator, and best-selling novelist, who has received several awards for contributions to architectural education. As always, the event will feature the National Participations, where each country presents its own exhibition in the Pavilions of the Giardini and the Arsenale, as well as a selection of Collateral Events organized by international institutions.

The Laboratory of the Future is an exhibition in six parts. It includes 89 Participants, over half of whom are from Africa or the African Diaspora. The gender balance is 50/50, and the average age of all Participants is 43, dropping to 37 in the Curator’s Special Projects, where the youngest is 24.

Arup has worked closely with the Biennale over the last four editions, working alongside curators and participants on a range of projects. This year, we have collaborated on a number of events at this year’s Exhibition, including supporting Lesley Lokko with her central pavilion, alongside several other events throughout the Biennale.

Arup Design Programme London: applications open

The ‘Arup Design Programme’ (ADP) is a free design, education and mentoring programme focused on giving students from Greater London insight into the day-to-day life of engineers, designers, planners, ecologists, landscape architects and other consultants working within the built and natural environment. The programme has successfully been run in Arup's Leeds and Manchester offices with more than 250 young people participating in the programme since 2010.

Through a week of interactive workshops and lectures, students will get an insight into the work of different professionals across the Arup London office, while working on a design task. This year, the programme will host 15 students for a week of learning and collaborative design on a selected theme: Designing a Green and Thriving London.

The students will work individually and in small groups, supported by Arup members, who will share their expertise first-hand, and advise and challenge the student’s developing knowledge; whilst giving autonomy and building confidence by encouraging them to assess the potential impact of their decision making.

This hands-on and immersive experience will allow students to apply the knowledge they gain to practice engineering and design solutions in a real-world scenario.

Metroselskabet has appointed COWI-Arup joint venture to lead design, environmental impact assessment and utility relocations of the new M5 low-carbon metro line.

Sustainability drives the design of this new metro line, which aims to reduce the overall carbon footprint by 50% compared with the city’s existing lines, while prioritising the passenger experience and safety to enhance sustainable mobility across the city of Copenhagen.
