Adam is a Graduate Fire Engineer working as part of Arup's Consulting and Technology team in London.
What did you study and where?
Structural Engineering with Architecture MEng (Hons) at The University of Edinburgh.
Why did you choose the Arup graduate programme?
Arup stood out to me as a firm due to their strength in my chosen discipline. In fire engineering, as in many other disciplines, Arup are recognised as a global leader. The opportunity to work with and learn from a large team of over 200 fire safety engineers, with a range of skills, was highly attractive.
Additionally, one of the main aims of the firm outlined in Ove’s key speech – of ‘total architecture’ –resonated with my interest in the integration of engineering and architecture.
What do you get up to in your day-to-day role?
As an Arup graduate, I have been given responsibility from the outset and felt valued on all projects that I have worked on. In my day-to-day role I work as part of a multi-disciplinary team, aiming to deliver holistic fire safety engineering solutions, concerned with the protection of life, property and the environment.

What have been your most enjoyable projects so far?
On my first day in London I was introduced to my first project – The Shard. I have enjoyed the challenges involved with working on a unique, existing building in the centre of London and getting to grips with the scale and level of detail required in its fire strategy. I have also managed to work with Arup’s Product Design and Ventures teams due to a connection that I formed on Arup’s Graduate Welcome Week. This collaborative work across disciplines within Arup has been particularly enjoyable as it has provided insight into other groups and allowed me to apply my skills elsewhere within the firm.
What are your future aspirations?
In the short term, I am aiming to explore and enjoy the range of project opportunities available within the fire team in London. I am also looking forward to making the most of the additional sports and social events on offer for early career Arupians, such as our ski trip and international football tournament. In the longer term, I am hoping to complete an international assignment with Arup to experience a different country, city and culture.
