Landscape architecture

We create thoughtful, resilient and sustainable places.

We create thoughtful, resilient and sustainable places.

Arup’s landscape architects create thoughtful, sustainable and award-winning landscape design. We work on a diverse range of award-winning projects at all scales and geographies.

Contemporary landscape design must tackle many pressing global challenges including urbanisation, climate change and habitat loss. Our approach has a priority to design inspiring and welcoming places. Importantly, they are complimented by strategies to deliver liveable cities, ensure biodiversity net gain, resilience to climate change, and better resource management.

Our design proposals are driven by consideration of how they can influence liveability and resilience of our environment, as well as applying a technical understanding of interconnected systems across water, ecology, transport, energy and waste.

Our landscape architects help steer sustainable outcomes at the outset of any project at all scales. We contribute to strategic development plans,?masterplans?for new cities, districts and mixed-use developments, major?infrastructure?projects as well as streetscapes, public realm and green building solutions.

We look to understand unique landscape and urban contexts and the way people use them. We integrate a unique vision to maximise the fundamental opportunities that creative landscape architecture brings in creating better places. ” Mike Wood Mike Wood Director

Integrating early to design greener outcomes

The opportunity for greening our cities has never been so important. Particularly as we face much broader challenges including urbanisation and habitat loss. This has encouraged us to adopt the UN SDGs and develop committed approach to how we engage with our natural systems in everything that we do. Landscape architects can contribute to these challenges and this is what drives our passion to creating meaningful experiences to a broad range of people.

Featured project

Bermondsey project

By starting early, we were able to embed the social, economic and environmental benefits into the landscape strategies and streetscape design for the Bermondsey project, creating a place where people can come together to live, work and play. Our strategic thinking combined with technical expertise and a co-ordinated design approach delivers a landscape that maximises urban green infrastructure and improves the local biodiversity whilst reflecting the modern backdrop to everyday life.

Our project solutions are more than recognising how good greening initiatives look and feel. They consider how meaningful they really are and how embedded they are in ideas about sustainability, responsibility, social value and ethics. Our work on the UK’s?High Speed 2 rail project?is an excellent example of how these initiatives can influence the outcomes of large scale complex projects.

We work closely with other environmental specialists, to produce design solutions that will maximise sustainability goals. By contributing early, we add greater value to design outcomes. by considering ways to improve connections to the natural world, ensure long lasting benefits to society as well as helping secure planning consents, or finding programme savings in cost, time and resources. We did this at the start of the?Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

Pioneering digital innovation

We use digital tools and processes to maximise our creativity and solve complex issues to produce transformative designs. We were recognised for Pioneering Digital Innovation in 2019 as winner of the Landscape Institute’s Landscape Innovation Award.

Using digital tools, allows us to revolutionise our projects and ensures that we are always defining new workflows and tools and facilitates our role as leader of large-scale multidisciplinary projects.

How we work with you

For our clients and design collaborators, we play an important interpretative role. We consult with many specialists as well as local experts and communities to translate ideas into coherent deliverable solutions.

Oman Botanic Garden

Oman Botanic Garden

Oman Botanic Garden is a project of national importance and international significance. It is an institution which seeks to understand and preserve the diversity and fragility of the natural world. Arup was challenged to design natural and authentic landscapes that varied from lush monsoon forests, to agricultural terraces and salt flats. We worked with existing natural ridges and ravines that traverse the site to design the buildings and the walkways, incorporating gardens, play spaces and shaded routes.

Keyn Glas

Keyn Glas

Working with Highways England, Arup has designed Keyn Glas, a landscape scheme alongside the A30 in Cornwall that takes a regenerative land management approach to restore habitats and historic landscapes, increase biodiversity, and reduce risks of climate change impacts such as flooding. The scheme aims to look beyond standard road scheme mitigation by addressing and enhancing the wider landscape’s aesthetic, cultural and ecological condition for generations to come.

Ulsoor Lake

Ulsoor Lake

For the Ulsoor Lake project in Bangalore, water quality improvements underpin the integrated landscape and engineering proposals to provide a high quality, inclusive and accessible destination for the wider metropolitan area that promotes health and well-being for local populations.

Belfast Urban Childhoods Masterplan

Belfast Urban Childhoods Masterplan

Arup developed a framework and design strategy that creates a more healthy, inclusive and child-friendly city centre in Belfast. This addresses challenges including the prevalence of car use, climate change, air pollution, drop in footfall and a lack of housing in the core of the city centre. The design strategy incorporates a range of physical interventions that aim to promote connectivity through placemaking and active travel schemes, in addition to the retrofit of existing urban landscapes to bring people back to Belfast’s city centre.

FitzPark

FitzPark

Working with partners including the Fitzrovia Partnership, we designed and implemented FitzPark, a new quality temporary public space in the immediate vicinity of our global headquarters in central London. We transformed a delivery bay on a busy urban street into a parklet containing seating and planters for local residents, employees and visitors to enjoy. The parklet demonstrates how small spaces can be adapted to provide people-friendly uses. This promotes health and wellbeing and encourages people to walk, cycle and spend more time outdoors.
