Amelia is a Graduate Sustainability and Climate Change Consultant in our Melbourne Environment and Resources team.
What did you study and where?
Bachelor of Economics (Economics and Policy) and Bachelor of Commerce (Sustainability) at Monash University.
When did you first learn about Arup? Why did you choose to join?
I first found out about Arup at a social impact networking night organised by a university club. Totally convinced that I would go into the public sector, the vac program opened my eyes to the incredible and varied impact that Arup projects have on ‘shaping a better world’. My few first projects made me realise that a career at Arup could mean working closely with communities and people, as well as creating change at city, state and even national scales.
What is your favourite part about being a grad at Arup?
Arup is a truly global firm and there are so many opportunities to work on projects around the world with diverse teams of incredible people. You are given the freedom and confidence to seek out work that you’re passionate about and I feel comfortable knowing that coming to work everyday will never mean leaving my own personal values at home. Being a grad at Arup means working alongside change-makers – people who inspire, challenge and support you every step of the way!
“I feel lucky to work for an organisation that values personal development and fulfilment, and one that meets my expectations of what ‘a better world’ looks like. ”
How do Arup’s goals and values align with your career goals and personal values?
Someone at Arup once told me ‘an organisation should amplify what you would like to achieve on your own’. For me, that is social usefulness, new challenges, humanitarianism, interesting and rewarding work, impact and happiness. It’s no coincidence that all of those appear in Ove Arup’s Key Speech. I feel lucky to work for an organisation that values personal development and fulfilment, and one that meets my expectations of what ‘a better world’ looks like.
What is the most exciting thing you have worked on/ achieved since joining Arup?
Working on a new green infrastructure policy for Melbourne has definitely been one of my highlights! Throughout the project, we met with academics, industry leaders, government and various Arup experts from across the globe to help define how we can drive better social, economic and environmental outcomes for my own city! That’s pretty special!
What is your favourite local Arup project and why?
There are so many inspiring and exciting Arup projects in our region, but I can’t go past One Melbourne Quarter (aka our beautiful Melbourne Office) when choosing a favourite. Working in this beautiful space is a constant reminder of Arup’s holistic and multi-disciplinary approach to design and sustainability – key reasons why I love Arup. The people-centred design of our office and outdoor spaces foster a collaborative and social culture, while the intelligent use of digital and passive design take care of our footprint.
