Henry is currently enrolled in the Arup internship programme whilst studying Civil and Architectural Engineering at University of Bath.
What do you study and where?
I’m currently studying Civil and Architectural Engineering at University of Bath, I am enrolled on a Masters degree programme that includes an industry placement year.
Why did you choose to do an internship?
My degree programme consists of 4 years’ study with a 1-year work placement in the middle, I chose this course structure because I thought it would break up my studies and be a good opportunity to get valuable industry experience. I applied to several engineering companies, but I was extremely pleased to secure a placement with Arup.
Why did you choose Arup?
Arup’s unique culture, in part due to being an employee-owned organisation, set them apart in my eyes. Their involvement with large scale civil engineering projects and reputation for innovative structural design also makes them an attractive company to do an internship with.

What do you get up to in your day-to-day role?
My day-to-day role involves using engineering principles, hand calculations and computer software to analyse and design various parts of the projects I’m working on. This can be anything from steel connection design to analysis models that predict the movement of a structure as a whole.
What has been your most enjoyable moment so far?
My most enjoyable moment so far was a design meeting where I showed my analysis model to other members of my team, to discuss changes to a steel floor beam arrangement. This was during my first month and despite being a new starter without much experience, the senior engineers included me in the decision-making process. It was a great introduction to the collaborative nature of our work.
What are your future aspirations?
My long-term goal is to become chartered with the Institution of Structural Engineers.
