Jochem started his career as a graduate engineer in Arup's civil structures team in Brisbane, Australia. Since then, he has moved around the Australasia region, spending time in various Australian cities and Southeast Asia. In 2017, Jochem joined the Aotearoa office to lead the engineering team.

Leading the engineering team in Aotearoa is an operationally focused role where I support our engineering teams to deliver our projects and growing our people, business, and capabilities.
What I like most about Arup is the tremendous passion our people have for delivering excellence and exceptional outcomes. Every day I'm encouraged and enabled to collaborate with specialists from all around the globe, which offers unique opportunities to develop my skills and the results we deliver to our clients.
I've enjoyed working for Arup in five countries, including Australia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and New Zealand. In its truly global nature, Arup has allowed me to work on projects in multiple other countries, including in Europe and North America.
“I've enjoyed working for Arup in five countries, including Australia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and New Zealand…shaping projects all around the globe is a massive privilege that the job brings. ”
The prospect of adventure, seeing new places, meeting, and building relationships with global colleagues and contributing to shaping projects all around the globe is a massive privilege that the job brings.
My most memorable moments at Arup are seeing the first cars coming through the Brisbane Airport Link tunnel, the first trains coming into a new station in Singapore, and the first shafts for the New Zealand Central Interceptor project. We brought the best of our global offering together for all these projects ? sharing success with my colleagues is a fantastic feeling.
Like most of New Zealand, Aotearoa is very multicultural, with over a third of its residents born overseas. My family is enjoying the diversity and is on a journey to better understand the Māori culture and world views. Outside of work I love doing DIY projects in my spare time. Our 50-year-old house offers plenty of opportunities and keeps me busy building decks, renovating bathrooms and some hardcore gardening and landscaping!
