Maggie is a graduate engineer working for Arup's Digitial team in Hong Kong.
What did you study and where?
I graduated from Imperial College London with an Honours Master’s Degree in Electronic Engineering before I joined Arup Hong Kong office in the end of 2017.
Why did you choose the Arup graduate programme?
I started to know about Arup when I lived in London and learned that the company has been involved in the design of many of the most notable projects around the world.
I initially chose an engineering related major in University with the intention to do some practical things that influence the way people live and Arup’s vision of “shaping a better world” attracted me when facing career choice.
Therefore, I applied for Arup graduate programme with the wish to be a member of the creative force and work on the world’s most prominent projects.
What do you get up to in your day-to-day role?
As a member of the Hong Kong Digital Services team, my job is to combine leading-edge digital solutions and processes with our domain expertise to deliver integrated built environment outcomes.
Digital transformation is an inevitable trend and I have been fortunately involved in the development of Neuron since my first day at Arup. Integrated with AI (Artificial Intelligence), IoT (Internet of Things) and BIM (Building Information Model), Neuron, our in-house developed AI smart building console empowers smart buildings with a ‘digital brain’ and transforms the traditional building management industry with a data-driven methodology.
“In addition to the skills and professional competence earned, I’m also encouraged to have a vision for the future of the industry and to sharpen critical thinking with innovative ideas to generate future-proof solutions ”
What has been your most enjoyable moment/project so far?
In 2019, we implemented Neuron in One Taikoo Place, a brand-new landmark in Hong Kong’s eastern CBD to shape it as the city’s first AI-enabled smart building. The deployment process was full of challenges without any previous projects for reference. We did face some problems in each stage including large volumes of building asset data and slow UI response speed, and the team had to explore an optimum solution through trials. It was really inspiring to get involved in such a project where our work has the potential to change the future.
What are your future aspirations?
Since my discipline is digital technology, I’m enthusiastic about the wide use of cutting-edge technologies in the built environment and hope to help refresh the traditional engineering field with digital tools.
As a young engineer, I’m also passionate about community activities such as organising STEM workshops for primary school students and sharing with female students to encourage them to pursue an engineering-related career. I would like to get further involved in community engagement to serve the society and transform people’s lifestyle with my professional skills in the coming future.
What have your learned here that you will carry with your career?
Being at Arup has exposed me to cutting-edge technologies and encouraged me to translate new knowledge into applications in a short time. In addition to the skills and professional competence earned, I’m also encouraged to have a vision for the future of the industry and to sharpen critical thinking with innovative ideas to generate future-proof solutions that meet clients’ needs.
Beyond work, have you participated in any social, sports or community activities in the firm? What do you enjoy most?
This year, I joined the East Asia Equality, Diversity & Inclusion committee. The committee aims to help create an enabling working environment based on fairness and respect, thus cultivating a more diverse Arup.
We hold events to discuss the relationship between innovation and diversity, share culture differences among countries and raise awareness and manage unconscious bias in our daily life. At Arup, we’re striving to make everyone feel valued and supported to be their best.
How would you describe working at Arup in three words?
Innovative, Inclusive, Impactful
