Megha is a Graduate Planner working as part of Arup's Planning team in our Leeds office.
What did you study and where?
MSc Transport Planning and Engineering at University of Leeds
Why did you choose the Arup graduate programme?
Arup is a place, where the projects carried out aligns with my values – Arup maintain sustainability in every field. Arup is also working to involve UN Sustainable Development Goals in all the projects we undertake. Arup has always set its social value higher, I was overwhelmed, when I learned about the key speech of Ove Arup and realised the company works on the same principals written 50 years ago. Arup is certified as the first engineering consultancy under the National Equality Standard (NES), which is under the umbrella of Equality diversion and Inclusion. When I got the opportunity, there was no looking back.
What do you get up to in your day-to-day role?
As a graduate, I am given the opportunity to be involved from the very beginning - towards the full cycle of the projects, I am given space to put forward my ideas and contribute towards the project - this really encourages me to develop my technical and personal skills.
Moreover, I got the opportunity to work on different projects, which helps me to learn and understand the depth of work that Arup is involved in. Arup encourages us to ask as many questions as possible and no question is considered stupid.
Arup organises “Lunch time sessions” where members from Arup talks about the project/concepts/personal development skills. These have helped me in understanding the wider aspects in not just transport but attending different sessions outside the topics as broadened my view on different sectors.

What has been your most enjoyable moment / project so far?
Arup is a platform of opportunities; the company encourages employees to become involved in different activities. I was happy to get involved in a development project from the beginning itself. This helped me in understanding the objectives in a deeper aspect.
Learning from the team has also been a great experience in advancing my technical knowledge, I was delighted that I was able to deploy what I have learned over my master’s and that made me happier.
Arup provide opportunities in various charity/volunteer works. Even though I have been at Arup for very little time, I was able to contribute to few of those. I enjoyed planting trees as a part of West Yorkshire River Trust. It was a great volunteering experience from Arup.
What are your future aspirations?
Arup is a place where the company encourages personal development and technical knowledge. Enhancing both these factors helps to strengthen one's knowledge and skills and reinforce them to be an expertise in every field. I have come across different opportunities in Arup which helped me understand where I can improve myself to be self-reliance towards my career ahead.
