I started at Arup in September 2006 in New York, and then I moved to London in 2008. After eight years there, I moved to San Francisco in March of 2016.
I really have found Arup to be a unique company since I started. It's owned in trust by its employees and has a good set of principles behind it. Our values set us apart from other corporations that focus primarily on the financial. There's something wholesome about aligning with a company’s values while also diving into the type of work you want to get into.
As an industrial engineer I have this innate need to solve problems. Industrial engineering is a very broad type of engineering that looks at efficiencies, ways to design systems, or create things that are operationally efficient. And you can apply that to a city or building or factory.
“At Arup, I’ve had the opportunity to move around the world working on interesting projects, solving interesting problems. It’s satisfying to know you’re working to solve something to shape a better world, at any scale. ”

For me, my involvement in the regeneration of King’s Cross and Coal Drops Yard was perhaps the most fascinating project I’ve worked on. It's an old Victorian industrial estate that was given a new breath of life. I'm always interested in these spaces where the old and new are right next to each other. Heatherwick Studio had a really clear vision for the project from the outset, and the part of the design team that I got to work with was almost entirely female, which was an inspiring environment.
By transforming this canal property, we were all engaged in the process of making a better place. A colleague of mine had worked on the earlier stages of how to bring in materials in a sustainable way. Then I jumped in on the design side of the project to figure out services and operations solutions.
It’s also really close to Arup’s London office. It was nice to see something in your backyard transform and add to its history.
