Pookie is a graduate working in Arup's Intelligent Mobility team in our Dublin office.
2019 Joined Arup
What did you study and where?
I studied Biomedical Engineering for my undergraduate and Mechanical Engineering with Business for my masters in University College Dublin.
Why did you choose the Arup graduate programme?
My step-brother actually worked in Arup Dublin as a graduate many moons ago and would point out various projects around Dublin to me as a child – so I’ve always grown up knowing the company and being inspired by its work.
Knowing about Arup also meant that i knew that it isn’t like other companies and corporations. We take great pride in our work, as we should. I firmly believe that we do “shape a better world” through our work. This was really important to me in deciding to work here.
“I feel extremely lucky to say that all my projects so far have been enjoyable in different ways. Some were technically challenging while others required more outside-the-box thinking and creativity. ”
What do you get up to in your day-to-day role?
I work in the Intelligent Mobility team, so my day to day role involves researching and applying knowledge surrounding Connected Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS). This can encompass anything from planning for Connected, Autonomous, Shared and Electric (CASE) vehicles to strategizing the technologies, data communication and systems integration layer that’s needed to enable interoperability, safety and efficiency of the national transport network.
What has been your most enjoyable moment / project so far?
I feel extremely lucky to say that all my projects so far have been enjoyable in different ways. Some were technically challenging while others required more outside-the-box thinking and creativity.
My most recent project, which was geared less towards my area of Intelligent Mobility and more towards Digital Real Estate, involved delivering a thought leadership research report into how digital technology is being used to drive sustainability and efficiency in the built environment. The highlight of the project for me was connecting with industry experts and writing about the current, real world innovations that are helping to guide cities into a more sustainable future.
What are your future aspirations?
With each new project I take on, I learn new skills and acquire new knowledge which enables me to push my own boundaries of control, creativity and impact within Arup. For me, these three elements are the key ingredients to job fulfilment and professional growth. I hope to continue this and become an expert within my field as well as a digital innovator.
