Sarah is a Senior Engineer working in Project Management in our Glasgow office. Originally from the USA, Sarah started work as a graduate in Arup’s Buildings team. Her work has ultimately led to her working full-time in project management for Infrastructure.
2007 Joined Arup
Around the end of 2009 I was offered an opportunity to gain some new experience working in support of the team put in place to manage Arup’s involvement in the Forth Replacement Crossing project (latterly known as the Queensferry Crossing) for Transport Scotland. At the time I never would have thought that this short term placement to provide some assistance would result in a career shift not only from building structures to infrastructure but from technical design to almost pure project management.
The Queensferry Crossing is also the project I’m most proud of. I was on the project for almost ten years and it was immensely satisfying to be involved in a project of that scale for nearly its entire duration from inception to delivery. I think the bridge is stunning and it’s a project that will impact on the country I’ve chosen to call home for generations to come and I can say it’s one of mine.
“I liked the idea of a company where everyone was working for the benefit of themselves and their colleagues with a focus on having a positive impact on the world. ”
Since completing my involvement in that project, I’ve had the privilege to work on some very large socially and economically significant infrastructure projects all over Scotland and beyond and have developed skills in contract, commercial, procurement and programme management. I have worked alongside government clients as part of the Employer’s team, and for contractor’s under design and build arrangements.
