What did you study and where?
I took my bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering at The University of Hong Kong.
Why did you choose the Arup graduate programme?
Arup is an international company involved in a variety of infrastructure works around the world. Being a member of Arup, I will be able to gain a lot of experience in civil engineering, which will be beneficial to my development into a professional engineer. That's why I am here.
What do you get up to in your day-to-day role?
My daily work is quite diverse, ranging from designing roads to managing project schedules.
“I would like to contribute to all kinds of infrastructure projects in Hong Kong and around the world. I’m passionate to use my expertise in civil engineering to make the world a better place and improve people’s quality of life. ”
What has been your most enjoyable moment/project so far?
The most enjoyable moment so far was getting involved in the land resumption of the Hung Shui Kiu project. It was the first time that I worked on this type of projects and I had so much to learn! For example, when proposing the resumption boundary, we had to consider a variety of constraints and multiple stakeholders to develop the best solutions. This is a very meaningful project and a valuable experience for me – a rare chance to for a young engineer to work on such a large-scale project.
What are your future aspirations?
I would like to become a Chartered Civil Engineer and contribute to all kinds of infrastructure projects not only in Hong Kong but also around the world. I’m passionate to use my expertise in civil engineering to make the world a better place and improve people’s quality of life.
What have your learned here that you will carry with your career?
I have learnt to present myself in a professional manner. Being able to present ideas professionally is equally important as design and calculation as it will help people better understand your solutions and thus gain their confidence and trust.
I have also learnt how to coordinate with people from different disciplines or backgrounds. In my daily work, one task often involves several disciplines and good communication is essential to deliver the task smoothly and efficiently. I believe these skills can be carried out along my engineering journey.
How would you describe working at Arup in three words?
Innovative, challenging and meaningful.
