What did you study and where?

I obtained my bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

Why did you choose the Arup graduate programme?

Arup is a large international firm with good values and countless opportunities for improvement. I was interested to join Arup because of the many projects which I could be involved in as well as the possibility for international mobility and development.

What do you get up to in your day-to-day role?

As an electrical engineer, my duties involve a wide range of design tasks such as electrical distribution design, lighting system design and vertical transportation system design among others. On a typical day I usually spend my time designing systems or preparing schematics and layout drawings to clearly communicate my design intent with other parties involved in the project.

What has been your most enjoyable moment/project so far?

One of my most enjoyable experiences so far was to design the electrical distribution system for an office development in Hong Kong. This project has improved my professional ability, and given me the chance to cooperate and interact with colleagues from other disciplines. Finishing the design and submitting all the drawings together gave me not only a great sense of achievement, but also a clear direction for improving my knowledge thanks to the thorough feedback from my seniors.

What are your future aspirations?

My first major professional milestone is to obtain my chartership in my discipline. Throughout my career I aim to become knowledgeable in my field, yet equally develop my communication and management abilities. Continuous learning is a pillar of my development and I aim to continue this whilst working with knowledgeable colleagues and delivering technically excellent solutions to clients.

What have your learned here that you will carry with your career?

During my time at Arup so far, my biggest lesson has been to understand the Total Design approach and analyse all projects from a multidisciplinary perspective. The concept of Total Design is the core of all the projects we work on, leading to the delivery of a complete design which solely focuses on addressing the needs and requirements of our clients with innovative and reliable solutions.
