Why Arup?
When people ask me, “Why Arup?” three things come to mind:
-
The opportunity to work with a group of dedicated, diverse, and knowledgeable colleagues every day.
-
The ability to work on complex and high impact projects from hospitals to university campuses to airports and everything in between.
-
The opportunity to make a real impact for the betterment of society in the climate space with sustainability and human health and wellbeing in mind.
What did you study and where?
I studied Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at Stanford University and obtained my Master of Science in the Sustainable Design and Construction (SDC) program with a focus in Energy. Before that I studied at the University of California, Berkeley where I obtained my Bachelor of Science in Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) with a minor in Energy Engineering.
“Every Arupian I have met is driven, dedicated, and knowledgeable, bringing their unique cultural backgrounds and technical expertise to the table. ”
What were some of your main takeaways from Graduate experience, our annual workshop for new graduate level employees?
The Graduate Experience program was a fun weekend full of talks, presentations, and workshops with my fellow new graduate-level colleagues. It was a fantastic way to meet our cohort across various offices and technical fields, and I made many lasting friendships though the experience.
What excites you about our Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion work at Arup?
I come from a large and diverse background myself. My family consists of people across various religions, ethnicities, and cultures; and working at Arup feels like and extension of that. All employees feel welcome no matter what their background, and that is one of the most important things to me.
What is your favorite part about being an Arupian?
My favorite part of being an Arupian is the amazing people I get to work with and interact with every day. Every Arupian I have met is driven, dedicated, and knowledgeable, bringing their unique cultural backgrounds and technical expertise to the table.
How has Arup's sustainability goals made an impact on your projects and/or day to day life?
As an Energy and Sustainability Consultant at Arup, Arup’s sustainability goals make a direct impact on my work. Arup not only takes on sustainability projects but leads by example and aims to reduce its own Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, water usage, and waste generation in the office. Working on the Sustainability team for a company that values its own sustainability and impact on the world is deeply inspiring, and I can see how sustainability and thoughtful design is prominent throughout all teams at Arup.
How do you reduce your carbon footprint?
One way I reduce my carbon footprint is by feeding food waste to my chickens at home instead of sending it to the landfill, and growing fruit and vegetables at home, reducing the CO2 emitted though food processing and transportation.
