As well as being a senior civil engineer and team leader at Arup, Tom is the community engagement disaster response and recovery coordinator for the Australasia region.
2011 Joined Arup
I first started working at Arup through a series of placements I completed during university. Through these, I learnt more about Arup’s values and ethics and realised how much these aligned with my own.
When I came to apply for graduate roles it was an easy decision to make applying for Arup permanently. I didn’t apply for any other jobs as I knew this was where I wanted to forge my career.
“Members of this firm share a similar empathy and desire to help people in great need. It makes me proud to work here. ”
During my early career I became more aware of the global challenges that we all face. This led to me applying for a three-month ‘Future Relief Worker Programme’ in Bangladesh, coordinated by RedR and Engineers without Borders and partly funded by Arup.
When I came back, I had a new perspective on life and on my career. I applied for funding through Arup’s community engagement programme to continue my work in Bangladesh and I’ve since returned about ten times in the last six years, working on projects ranging from sustainable building design to garment factory structural surveys, and more recently providing humanitarian support to the Rohingya crisis. What started out as a leap of faith became a huge part of my career and my purpose at Arup.
In 2016 I moved to Melbourne on a long-term assignment in the civil engineering team which was part of the Transport and Resources Group. Since relocating, I have been working on building developments and major transport infrastructure projects as well as expanding my involvement in international development and community engagement projects. This included becoming the Disaster Response and Recovery Coordinator for the Australasian Region.
After further training and development, I have become a Member of RedR Australia, meaning I am able to be deployed as an engineer to disaster situations through organisations including the UN.
