Tom is an Apprentice working in Arup's Advanced Digital Engineering group based in our Manchester office.
What did you study and where?
I studied Biology, Business Studies and Computer Science A-Levels at 6th Form.
Why did you choose the Arup Apprentice Program?
The combination of being able to work on interesting and challenging real world projects all while studying towards a degree with no student debt seemed to me like a no brainer especially at Arup as not only is the scope of the projects we work on are unlike anywhere else but the culture here is second to none.
The company cares about you and your development and will give you all the support you need to be successful during and after your apprenticeship. In addition to this at the end of my apprenticeship I will have 4 years’ work experience that full time University students simply cannot get which will include all the skills I have learned at work as well as at University which these skills and work experience are heavily sought after in industry.
What do you get up to in your day-to-day role?
Currently I am working on an automation tool which I am proud to say I have a significant role in. This includes learning and using the latest technologies and languages to develop the tool as well as mentoring junior members of staff who have recently joined. Furthermore, I liaise with stakeholders and senior members of staff to update them on the progress of the tool in addition to understanding what requirements and features are required for the tool.

What has been your most enjoyable moment/project so far?
Our team was working on a significant project for a client, which I believed I didn’t have enough experience to work on. However, my team members thought otherwise and assigned tasks for me to complete and while I did need a little bit of help, I managed to solve the tasks which are now used in the full working version of the system which felt really rewarding as not only had I contributed to a significant project that I thought I didn’t have enough experience to do but I also got to learn about a programming language I hadn’t used before and wouldn’t learn about at University but is heavily used across the industry and as such was extremely useful to learn.
What are your future aspirations?
In the long term I would like to stay at Arup and either progress to a senior developer or go into management as Arup are a fantastic company to work for and I am extremely happy here, everyone is easy to talk to, the scope or the projects we work on are unlike anywhere else and the company does everything it can to support you both during and after your apprenticeship.
In addition to this there is also a fantastic culture of development and so if you decide you would like to learn about something new be it related to a project your working on or not the company will do its best get the training you want be it through Arup University (an internal VLE that has a range of courses covering a multitude of topics) or via external training. Arup is a fantastic place to work and I highly recommend anyone considering an apprenticeship to apply here as you will learn skills that traditional educational routes simply cannot teach you, all while earning a wage and with no student debt it is simply the best of all worlds.
