Since I started working for Arup as a graduate, I’ve had plenty of opportunities; exciting projects, international travel and funding to support research into new ideas. The professional journey at Arup isn’t prescriptive – we encourage people to learn from those around them but to chart their own paths – this has been my experience.
My first position was within the Advanced Technology & Research (AT+R) group in London. AT+R is a diverse group of engineers and analysts solving some of the most complex problems across industries - I’ve worked on everything from bridges to food!
I then moved on to the London Buildings group, working on high-profile, high-rise projects around the world such as Torre BBVA Bancomer in Mexico City and Yongsan Landmark Tower in South Korea. Alongside this, I was involved in a range of international development projects. I spent some time in Bangladesh after a cyclone in 2008 and did research into improving traditional construction techniques in seismic environments. This combination of cutting edge design and international development was extremely stimulating and rewarding.
“Throughout my career, people have taken a personal interest in me and supported my development... The people at Arup have been critical to my growth, and as a relatively new leader I’m determined to support younger professionals. ”
In 2013 I was asked to move to New York to start an AT+R team, which was both exciting and daunting. Drawing on my previous experience and strong Arup networks, I grew a small business, hired team members, won new work, developed client relationships, and delivered projects. Now I have a new role, I’m proud to see this team continue to grow and flourish under new leadership – I think this is my proudest professional achievement so far.
In 2018, I took on the role of Consulting Practice Leader in New York, where I lead a team of over 150 people, ranging from engineers, to former bankers and software developers.
Throughout my career, people have taken a personal interest in me and supported my development. I’m still grateful to Richard Matthews who supported me right at the beginning of my career and without whom I might have taken a different path. He was (and continues to be) so enthusiastic about his work, and despite being very busy and in demand spent time helping me understand the context of my work. The people at Arup have been critical to my growth, and as a relatively new leader I’m determines to support younger professionals in their development and increase accessibility to our profession.
