Grupo Aeroportuario de la Ciudad de México (GACM) has appointed Arup to make the Mexico City New International Airport (NAICM) the first airport in the world to obtain LEED Platinum.
Arup has been appointed by GACM to develop the sustainability plan for the new airport in Mexico City. The new airport — for which terminal design is underway in collaboration with Foster + Partners and FR-EE (Fernando Romero Enterprise) — will triple the city’s existing airport passenger and cargo capacity and promote economic development in the city’s metropolitan area. Expected to begin operations by 2020, GACM’s goal is for NAICM to be the first airport in the world to obtain LEED Platinum certification v4 at its main terminal.

GACM seeks to adopt international best practices related to green airport operations by using renewable energy resources, promoting energy efficiency, waste management, and the use of public transport, and developing programmes that would protect water resources and existing wildlife and vegetation.
