New Leader looks to make a sustainable difference for Indonesia

Khalid Saleem has been appointed Leader for Arup in Indonesia, bringing to the role his deep experience in engineering, project management and leadership in senior positions across Australia and Southeast Asia.

“I am very excited by the opportunity to lead Arup’s team in Indonesia and work in partnership with our clients on high quality, sustainable outcomes,” Khalid said.

“Indonesia and the other Southeast Asian countries offer huge opportunities and I will be collaborating with Arup teams across the region and globally to deliver many successful projects.”

The Arup Indonesia team is working on plans for the New Capital City and various other urban and tourism masterplans. Menara Astra and Benhill Central Highrise Towers are Arup projects and the team has recently completed the Mass Rapid Transit Jakarta Railway Protection Zone Guidelines and a Project Management Office consultancy to PT KAI for Jabodetabek Light Rail Transit. 

Khalid was previously the Infrastructure Leader for Indonesia. He has held senior positions at SMEC (including General Manager for the Transport Business in Asia Pacific) and was a member of its Asia Pacific Management Board for six years.

As a project director and civil engineer, he has worked on major projects in Australia, Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines, Myanmar and other Southeast Asian countries. His portfolio includes:

  • Jakarta to Bandung High Speed Rail, Indonesia

  • Hanoi Metro Line 3 – CP03, Vietnam

  • Trung Luong to My Thuan Expressway, Vietnam

  • Maubin to Phyapon Road Rehabilitation, Myanmar

  • NLEX – SLEX Expressways Connector Road, Manila, Philippines 

  • Northern Busway Alliance, Brisbane, Australia

  • South East Transit, Brisbane Australia.

“I’ve learnt, by working on these projects and in fact throughout my career, that the keys to success on any project include maintaining open and honest communication, fostering good teamwork, striving for excellence and creating a win-win situation,” he reflected.

Khalid holds a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering: he is an Engineering Executive, Fellow and Chartered Professional Engineer of the Institution of Engineers Australia; a Member and Chartered Engineer of the Institution of Civil Engineers UK; and a Fellow and Chartered Manager of the Chartered Management Institute UK.
